Tales From the Sea

Dear Parents,

On Monday, after attaching our colossal squid’s tentacles and his basketball sized eyes, the class dictated a story. Not surprisingly, our squid was the main character.

During circle we read Tickly Octopus, Aren't You Glad You’re Not an Octopus, and our own colossal squid story. The story began in a galaxy, far, far away… The next day we wrote a second story. Our colossal squid dominated this tale as well. The class wrote our black hole and volcano into the story. It was a whale of a tale!

Our last music class with Alex was filled with drum and xylophone sounds. The children returned to the classroom making bird sounds. "Whippoorwill, whippoorwill!” was the favorite.  While half the class sang with Alex, in the classroom we worked on painting, gluing, and coloring props for our story.

Pool day went swimmingly!  We sang The Swimming Pool song and Down In The Bottom Of The Deep Blue Sea. Everyone got long turns to splish-splash about. Someone shouted, "This is the best!"

On Friday we acted out one of our tales. Everyone chose which part they wanted to be and we got to work. The story involves a storm, and the first dramatization very much resembled a storm.

Our graduation show and ceremony will be on June 26 @ 11:00 am.

Have a not stormy weekend!

Giant Manta Ray vs. Colossal Squid

Dear Parents,

After brainstorming giant sea creatures, the class voted on which one to create. There was a tie between the giant manta ray and the colossal squid. The runner-ups were the blue whale and the whale shark. We learned that the giant manta ray lives up to forty-five years, while the colossal squid only lives one to two years.

We looked at several pictures of colossal squids before assembling his body out of two colossal pieces of paper, stapled together. We fed him all of our lists and dictations off of our walls from the whole school year, but not before reading and reminiscing. Our colossal squid is filled with our memories. We also fed him our weeping willow tree. We painted him a burnt orange and set him free in our ocean mural.

Our birthday fish swam across the room to join him in the ocean.

Have a Colossal Weekend,

Therese
